In exciting news for the public safety industry, President Obama in February signed into law a payroll-tax cut extension which will reallocate the 700 MHz of the D-Block spectrum and subsequently provide $7 billion in federal grants to expand a nationwide LTE network for first responders (Jackson). After the 9/11 tragedy, a failure of public safety communications systems, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, it became ever more apparent that first responders needed a fail-proof interoperable communications system. Police, fire and EMS personnel were unable to communicate because they were using different spectrum bands and their communications devices were not interoperable making it impossible to coordinate rescue operations (Ramsay).

Apollo Safety Announces Its Platinum Pick For Carbon Monoxide Detector
In response to yet another incident of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning this season, Apollo Safety is strongly recommending that residential buildings adhere to state laws mandating CO detectors be installed. At St. Mary’s Church in Cranston, R.I. this week seven children from St. Mary’s Elementary School were hospitalized after attending a service at the church. According to NBC 10, all 70 children present were evacuated after a boiler malfunctioned, releasing CO fumes.
“Every year we hear of these incidents, all of which could be prevented with the proper measures taken,” said Apollo Safety president and CEO John V. Carvalho III. “A quality, low level CO detector, like the CO Experts 2010 can mean the difference between life and death. Installing such a device will alert you when very low levels of CO is detected, ensuring that you can evacuate safely before too much of this poisonous gas is ingested.”
The permissible exposure levels (PEL) of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) is 50ppm, and the recommended exposure limit (REL) is 35ppm by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The CO Experts 2010 detector alerts at the very low level of 7ppm with a visual alert and at 10ppm the audible alarm sounds, greatly reducing the likelihood of CO poisoning.
The CO Experts 2010 detector is available for residential buildings through Apollo Safety by visiting www.apollosafetyproducts.com or by calling (800) 813-5408.
Indoor Ice Skating Arenas Cause Concern for Carbon Monoxide Poisonings
Carbon Monoxide Hazards At Ice Rinks Around the U.S. and Canada Can Be Reduced With Gas Detection Devices
Earlier this week the Today show aired a segment titled, “Hidden Dangers of Indoor Ice Rinks,” exposing the potential risks of inhaling hazards like carbon monoxide (CO) for the users of the estimated 8,500 ice rinks across the United States and Canada. The source of this poisoning? Usually it’s the fuel-fired ice resurfacing machines used to keep the ice clean and smooth, but can also be attributed to malfunctioning equipment used to keep the rinks cold.
In recent years there have been several incidents of athletes and spectators at indoor ice arenas falling ill by way of inhaling these toxic fumes. In Clearwater, Fla. earlier this month, 23 children and adults were sickened and six were treated at a local hospital after a malfunctioning dehumidifier filled the space with CO, as reported by www.tampabay.com. And, according to Reuters, in February of this year, in Gunnison, Colo., 61 people at a youth girls’ hockey tournament were poisoned, likely from a buildup of CO from ice resurfacing machine, the local fire marshal said. In response to these incidents, Apollo Safety is offering CO solutions for rink owners and managers at http://www.apollogassafety.com/.
“Too often we learn of near disasters, near death experiences, and unfortunately death from carbon monoxide poisoning,” said John V. Carvalho III, president and CEO of Apollo Safety. “More often than not these tragedies could have been avoided with inexpensive CO devices readily available from professional gas detection suppliers and gas monitor calibration. Don’t let your family, customers or workers suffer to this end.” Continue reading
